Two-hand Control Devices

UPDATE

The new UNI EN ISO 13851 "Safety of machinery - Two-hand control devices - Principles for design and selection" came into force on 4 July 2019, replacing the previous UNI EN 574:2008.

The standard specifies the safety requirements of two-hand control devices (THCD), the dependence of the output signal on manual operation and defines the main characteristics to guarantee the safety and health of workers. The measures to be taken and the minimum distances to avoid circumvention of two-hand control devices remain unchanged. The UNI EN ISO 13851 standard does not apply to devices intended to be used as validation devices, as control devices with maintained actuation or as special control devices.

The document also refers to the standards - in their updated version - UNI EN ISO 12100: 2010 "Safety of machinery - General principles of design - Risk assessment and risk reduction" which specifies principles of risk assessment and risk reduction to help designers in achieving this objective and to UNI ISO/TR 14121-2: 2013 "Safety of machinery - Risk assessment - Part 2: Practical guide and examples of methods", in order to place the design of two-hand control systems within the overall design of the machines. To reinforce this principle is the recall to the full text of UNI EN ISO 13849-1: 2016 "Safety of machinery -- Safety-related parts of control systems General principles for design".
